About the Event

February 19 is a snow date if it is actively storming on February 18.

Join Amber and Erica from Friends of Pachaug Forest for a winter walk to learn and see why Winter can be the best time of year to be outside!

Already know what magic the forest holds in winter? Or maybe you’ve wanted to wander outside or thought about heading out, but something held you back?  Whatever your experience level, this event is for you!  We’re happy to help answer any questions in advance or during the event about enjoying the forest in the winter to help boost your winter exploration confidence.

We will meet at the CCC Camp Lonergan site and decide on our course based on trail and weather conditions.  This will be an easy 2-2.5 mile course. The hike will begin at 10 am and end by 12:00 pm. Kids and leashed pets are welcome.

Don’t have gear or have questions or concerns before the hike?  We’re happy to help find some extra gear to help get you participating or answer any questions about enjoying the forest in winter to build your confidence and help convince you to come.  Never snowshoed before and there is snow on the ground?  Now is the perfect time to give it a try!  Please email us at friendsofpachaugforest@gmail.com or contact Amber at adg6283@gmail.com and we’ll help you out with gear or questions!

Top reasons those in the know like to enjoy the forest in winter: Little to no bugs, greater visibility which awards a different perspective of the forest, and less trail traffic!  Just remember to dress in layers, bring water and a snack, and review the ten essentials list to consider updating your pack accordingly based on your outdoor plans.

If there is snow on the ground, we’ll plan to try to snow-shoe.  If there is no snow, we’ll have a nice meander through the forest.  If conditions are icy, microspikes are recommended, but we’ll adjust our trail plans accordingly so not required.  If there is an active storm system with winter weather warnings on February 18, we will hold the event on February 19 instead (registrants will be emailed).

To access the event, turn off State Route 49 in at the Smokey Bear sign at Pachaug State Forest Headquarters just north of Voluntown.  Follow Headquarters Road through the forest and bear right at the CCC Statue. The CCC camp is just ahead up to the right.

RSVPs recommended, but not required so we can contact you in the event of inclement weather.
